The Difference Between Gi & No-Gi Training

The Difference Between Gi & No-Gi Training

At Renzo Gracie Clarksville, we’re not your average martial arts gym — we are a Combat Sports Academy offering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Judo, Wrestling, Boxing, Muay Thai, and fitness programs under one roof. Whether you’re brand new to martial arts or already experienced, one of the first choices you’ll make in BJJ is whether to train in Gi or No-Gi.

Both styles share the same foundation, but they emphasize different skills and strategies. Let’s break it down.

Gi Training

This class welcomes all experience levels, focusing on technique, control, and strategy using the traditional gi. Students learn grips, sweeps, submissions, and positional dominance, improving both offense and defense.

Gi training uses the traditional kimono (jacket, pants, and belt). The material allows for grips on the sleeves, collar, and pants, which creates a slower, more methodical pace of rolling.

Key Features of Gi Training:

  • Emphasis on grip fighting and collar chokes
  • Slower, more technical pace.
  • Builds patience and problem-solving.
  • Ideal for traditional martial arts purists

No-Gi Training

All Levels No Gi is a dynamic class for all levels, emphasizing speed, movement, and control without the gi. Students develop takedowns, submissions, and positional awareness, enhancing their adaptability for self-defense, sport, or MMA.

No-Gi training is done in rashguards and shorts, removing the use of clothing grips. The pace is typically faster, emphasizing body control, clinching, and athleticism.

Key Features of No-Gi Training:

  • Faster, more explosive pace
  • Focus on underhooks, overhooks, and body control
  • Popular in submission grappling competitions and MMA
  • Develops agility and adaptability

Multi-Discipline Integration

At Renzo Gracie Clarksville, training goes beyond just BJJ. Students cross-train in Judo, Wrestling, Boxing, and Muay Thai — plus dynamic fitness and conditioning through our Prime Performance fitness program. This gives our athletes a more complete foundation, whether they want to compete, improve fitness, or learn self-defense.

Mat Culture & Community

One of the most unique aspects of training here is our culture. The mats are a place where egos are left at the door, and progress is celebrated at all levels.

  • We foster a family-friendly, supportive environment for beginners and competitors alike.
  • Our Academy is home to international and national competitors in multiple disciplines.
  • Joining our competition team is encouraged, but never mandated — individual growth is the ultimate goal.

Facilities & Recovery

Training hard is important, but so is recovery. Our facility offers:

  • Private showers & saunas
  • Strength & conditioning equipment
  • Flexible class schedule to fit your lifestyle

Outside of our membership, our Academy is also home to independent wellness services such as:

Which Should You Choose — Gi or No-Gi?

The truth is, you don’t have to pick just one. Training in both Gi and No-Gi makes you a more well-rounded grappler. Gi builds precision and patience, while No-Gi builds speed and adaptability.

Most of our students train in both, and our schedule allows you to choose based on your goals.
